Australia Public Service Anti-Corruption Conference November 2022

The Australia Public Service Anti-Corruption Conference (APSACC) 2022 was held in November and what an amazing conference it was.

From the opening remarks from Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus and NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet to the thought-provoking presentations from numerous leaders in anti-corruption and integrity areas, the conference was an excellent opportunity to learn, network and engage.

APSACC was jointly-hosted by the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity (ACLEI), the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (NSW ICAC) and the NSW Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).

This leading anti-corruption event brings together Australian and international anti-corruption experts to speak on risk identification and management, emerging trends and innovative approaches to combat corruption and heighten workplace integrity systems. The conference includes plenary sessions, discussion panels and workshops, and provides opportunities for developing professional networks across a wide range of jurisdictions and expertise.

Our own CFPC Capability and Development Director, Chris McDermott, facilitator David Whitfield and learning and development specialist Adriana Wlodarczyk held an in-person, sold-out workshop as part of the conference. The workshop was attended by 24 state and territory government representatives, as well as some from Pasifika nations. It aimed to provide participants with practical tools and advice on:

  • how to identify, record and prioritise fraud and corruption risks in their organisation
  • leading practice techniques to help identify risks and vulnerabilities in their programs and functions and to support good policy design
  • how to increase their organisational resilience to fraud and corruption, and
  • how to uncover and address their control vulnerabilities.

Participants applied these lessons enthusiastically via a number of activities throughout the day, leading to a hugely successful event.

Workshop attendees commented that ‘the workshop provided us with practical advice on the tools we can use in fraud prevention and was thoroughly engaging’ and ‘[the] presentation was really slick! Good flow of information, very relevant & good use of case studies. All presenters were very knowledgeable & engaging’.

Other staff from the CFPC were also in attendance at the conference and have come away with practical lessons including:

  • the close link between fraud and corruption
  • how organisational culture drives ethical behaviour and the importance of ‘tone from the top’
  • the importance of integrity risk assessments in enabling prevention, detection and response activities
  • the importance of learning lessons from case studies, and
  • the importance of using data to counter fraud and corruption.

The next APSACC will be held in 2024 in Darwin, hosted by the Office of the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption, Northern Territory.
